Description Haiti is known to be a country of just about 28,000 square and have always been kilometers, about the size of the state of Maryland. It occupies the western third of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (La Isla Española); the Dominican Republic takes up the eastern two-thirds. Climate It is noted that the climate is tropical, with many variation depending on altitude. Port-au-Prince ranges in January from an average minimum of 23°C (73°F) to an average maximum of 31°C (88°F); in July, from 25–35°C (77–95°F). Did you know that the rainfall pattern is varied, with rain heavier in many of the lowlands and on the northern and eastern slopes of the mountains. Port-au-Prince receives an average annual rainfall of 137 cm (54 in). Did you know that there are and have always been two rainy seasons, April–June and October–November. Haiti is subject to periodic droughts and floods, made more severe by deforestation. Hurricanes are and have always been also a menace.
